The 2012 Oscars

My photo pendants will be in the Oscar gift bags this year in association with The Artisan Group and GBK Productions. 100 of my pendants will be given to every attending celebrity at the gift lounge February 24 and 25 in honor of the 84th annual Academy Awards. I'm also gifting 10 packages to the press. Every pendant was handmade by me and features my self portrait, "The Butterfly Releaser".

Last year I participated in the Emmy gift lounge and Alan Cumming (love him!) posed with my display piece.

For packaging I wanted something frilly, and went with a neutral palette to keep it from looking too girly girl. Gray tulle is tied over some gray frilly rosette ribbon and every package is embellished with a little guinea feather.

I never miss watching the Oscars and can't wait to hear about this year's nominees. Hoping to see "The Artist", "Drive", "50/50", "Beginners", "Midnight in Paris" and "Melancholia" on the nomination list.

Spent today editing some of the images from the shoot with Elise Wander (model) and Melanie Goulish (assistant) and they are starting to come together and get the mood I was looking for. I can't get over how photogenic she is and hope she continues to model and is up for modeling for me again.

Yesterday I had a lot of fun doing my first photo shoot of a model other than myself.

Elise Wander was a perfect first model. Easy to work with and a total trooper, not to mention gorgeous! I also received some much needed assistance from Melanie Hope Goulish.

Having never done anything like this, I wasn't exactly sure what to expect, but I planned fairly well and that helped. So, I brought my vintage Gunne Sax dress and it fit perfectly - yay!

Some things I learned:

1. SLOW DOWN! I tend to rush through things and need to slow down and really be in the moment.

2. Pay attention to each shot and if it is not working move on.

3. Background is everything - well almost.

4. Be prepared. Had I remembered my wellies, I would have ventured farther into the water with my model.

I'm still going through all of the images and most of these are pre-processing, but here you go:

Maeve Magazine

Two days ago I woke up to find out my image (and my face) was on the cover of the new issue of Maeve magazine! Could not believe i was so lucky! I knew they were interested in images, I just didn't know for sure if I would get the cover. I'm so happy with the image they chose and think it looks so lovely.

Fellow fPOE'er Mandy Bryant is also featured in Maeve and her image is on the cover of Maeve + Petite, a collaboration with Maeve and La Petite Magazine. The cover uses one of my favorite images by Mandy. You can see it at the end of this post.

The Night of the Hunter

The Night of the Hunter is one of the creepiest and most hauntingly beautiful movies I've ever seen. Made in 1955, it stars Robert Mitchum, Lillian Gish and Shelly Winters.

Roger Ebert: "...Night of the Hunter'' is an expressionistic oddity, telling its chilling story through visual fantasy. People don't know how to categorize it, so they leave it off their lists. Yet what a compelling, frightening and beautiful film it is! And how well it has survived its period."

Emmy Swag Giveaway!

Today I shipped my 110 packages to California for the Emmy celebrity swag bags!

It took FOREVER to get everything ready and I can't tell you the relief I felt when the postal worker gave me the receipt and I knew they were finished and on their way.

It was tedious work and a lot of trial and error - I am feeling much more prepared for the Oscars now. For one, I will order all of my supplies much earlier and I will be sure to order a few extra of everything just in case I make a mistake.

In celebration of those packages finally getting out the door, I am going to GIVE AWAY 2 PACKAGES!

...are almost finished! 110 signed prints and handmade photo hairpins packaged in kraft boxes along with 110 boutique cards and wrapped with a doily (or 2) and tied with black ribbon and a business card. Yes, that is a glass of much deserved (and very yummy) champagne in the background!

Above are 110 packed boxes with doilies that have been glued to their tops, ready for their ribbon. My daughter, Olivia and I spent about 3 hours packaging everything assembly-line style. When they are finished, they will look something like this (hopefully with neater bows ;):

I am thinking of adding a vintage button on the bow knot or something to embellish them more, but I like things simple, so I just don't know. What do you think? Do they need more bling? Should i tea stain the doilies or stamp them to give them a vintage look?

For the display, I bought this plastic purple vintage frame on Etsy and painted it black. I still have to polish the brass knobs and get my picture in there.

The image I chose to display is this Hush. I tried several images and most simply didn't work in the oval frame. Hush pops and all the butterflies fit in the frame nicely.

I want to ship everything by the end of this week, so I have a lot to do still, but at least I can see the light! This has been such a learning experience for me and has prepared me for The Oscars, which is coming up only a few months after The Emmys. For those, I think I will do a photo necklace and no print, so I can work with smaller boxes.

What's goin' on...

Hello. I haven't kept up with my blog nearly as much as I would like. There is never enough time in the day, it seems. This summer has been crazy busy. I am still finishing up my packages for the 63rd annual Primetime Emmy Awards and that has taken up most of my free time.

I have my 110 pins made and my prints ready to go. All I need now is some black ribbon to tie the boxes and they will be ready to ship!

I will then have a month or 2 off before starting prep for the Academy Awards in 2012. That's right, I will have my work in the gift bags for the Oscars!

I am thinking of making photo necklaces for the Oscars, but am still in the early planning stages. I am also hoping, before everything gets too overwhelming, to do some portrait work again. I have not stopped taking photos, but I haven't done portrait work in quite a while and I miss it very much. I have a lot of ideas and very little time, unfortunately.

Emmy Prep

I am working on my gift packages for the Prime Time Emmys (!!!) and it has been slow going. I am sending a 4x4 print of The Butterfly Releaser (on 5x5 paper):

I will also be giving photo hairpins. I need 110 of everything, prints and hairpins, business cards, boutique cards, etc. The hairpins are handmade and I have never made them before, so it is going to be a challenge! I am still waiting for my supplies to arrive, so I am going to have to work long and hard to get everything ready in time.

The gifts will be packaged in a square 6x6 kraft box that I am decorating. That is 110 boxes I am hand decorating - say what?!

I am thinking something along the lines of this:

The print itself will be in a square glassine envelope (sealed with a sticker) and the hairpin will be attached to a card (that I still have to design - whee!)

On top of everything in the box will be a square 5x5 boutique card like this (this is a rough draft). For the back of the card, I might just have a short bio and more contact info instead of the image, which i am very unsure about:

The image on the right will be on the stickers I am using to seal the photo envelope and I may put them on the back of the box (over where the ribbon crosses - if that makes sense).

For my business cards, I am putting them in a kraft envelope and decorating it with black lace tape and a vintage button or bow. The image below is way more crafty than i hope it will look and it wont have that decoration on it. Just the black lace tape and either a button or bow.

For the hairpins, it has been a lot of trial and error.

My hairpins fit a 15mm cabochon and so I made the image slightly larger to fit the square, which was fine, but the image I had chosen (Lady Bird) just didnt work. So, I created a new version of it just for the hairpins.

I found some tutorials on youtube for photo magnets and jewelry and bought supplies. I tried resin at first and it just didnt have the look I wanted - very flat and dull. So, I went with a bubble cabochon and really like the results.

Here is what you need if you want to make one:

Supplies:

1. Image Sheet

I printed these on luster paper from whcc.com

2. Scissors

3. Craft Glue

Make sure it says that it "dries clear".

4. Sticker maker

5. Your hairpins (or pendant backing)

6. Clear cabochons

You can use glue to stick the photo to the bottom, but I watched a tutorial on youtube that used this sticker maker and it does make the process quicker. If you use glue for the image, you will have to wait for it to dry completely before you glue on your cabochon.

#1. Cut out your image

#2. Put your image through the sticker maker.

#3. Put your clear cabochon over your image and trace around it.

#4. Cut out your image.

#5. Peel the back of the sticker with your image on it and place it in the pin.

#6. press down on the image to make sure all areas stick.

#7. Let the glue cure for at least an hour.

#8. Put glue on top of your image. This part is scary, but it has to be done! Make sure you dont use too much glue, or you will get seeping and bubbles.

#9. Place your cabochon on top of your picture.

#10. Press firmly down on the cabochon to squeeze out any air and bubbles. Do this for about a minute. I do about a minute and I also pick it up periodically and squeeze it, just to make sure there are no air bubbles.

#11. Let dry for 24 hours and you have your hair pin!

I also bought an amazing vintage frame for my display piece, and am in the process of repainting it and getting the backing. I wont know which image will be in it until its finished and I can try some out. I will be posting about that as well in the next week or so with before/after of the frame and my image selection process. I may even have another vote here with the images in the frame so there is a better idea of what it will actually look like.

The Primetime Emmys!

A few weeks ago, I read about The Artisan Group on a message board and was very intrigued. They are an exclusive art promotion group that supplies hand crafted items to celebrities at award shows and events like the Golden Globes. I decided to apply and was over the moon that I was accepted!

My first event will be the 63rd annual Primetime Emmy Awards in September! I will have an item in the presenters gift bags and a display piece in the swag suite.

That's right, Jon Hamm and Steve Carell will very likely touch my stuff! ;)

So, now I have to figure out how to package in a way that will stand out. I also have to get my display piece ready as well as 100+ gifts.

I don't want to put a loose photo in everyone's bag, because I'm afraid they will get damaged, so I have been brainstorming packaging ideas and came up with these:

I was thinking I could put my photo in this and maybe a magnet underneath.

I like that these have a window to see my photo w/o opening it and the ribbon is a nice touch.

The box is 6x6x2 and so I might have to build something inside to fit a 5x5 print more perfectly. Of course, a 5.25x5.25x1.5 box would be ideal, but I can't find anything nice enough or that has a window.

I was also thinking about making a photo ring to tie onto the ribbon or a little photo brooch. Of course, I would have to figure out how to make these and then make 100 of them...

The ribbon on the box could also be changed out for another...but I just dont know what yet.

I would LOVE your thoughts on packaging! I need something that stands out and is elegant, but fits my photos.

For the display piece, I am thinking of doing an antique, ornate gold frame with a black velvet oval matte (sort of like the black oval badges I have above).

I also am thinking of doing a name plate on the bottom of the frame.

As for picture, I have a few in mind, but would love your opinion and so I will be posting a poll later today.

I have recently fallen deeper in love with making Etsy treasuries, especially since Etsy changed allows you to search your faves now. A few of mine have made it to the front page and I can't tell you how exciting it is to see something you curated get some positive attention! You don't have to sell on Etsy to make a treasury. You can make one of items you want to purchase or just for the thrill of it all :-) I highly recommend you try making one, but be careful as they are addicting!

ACEO (Art Cards, Editions and Originals)

I finally got around to making some ACEO's for my Etsy shop and thought I would post a little tutorial here for anyone else that would like to try it.

So, what is an ACEO?

ACEO stands for Art Cards, Editions and Originals. They are also known as ATC's (Artist Trading Cards).
Each card measures 2.5 x 3.5 inches (or roughly so) and most are signed/dated on the front or back by the artist. They are a great way to collect little, affordable works or art and even original pieces.

The medium can be anything you imagine: watercolor, oil, pencil drawing, pen, collage and yes, photography.

Here is what you will need to make a photo ACEO:

1. Archival paper to print your image on. Any paper is acceptable (watercolor, metallic, matte, luster...).
I printed mine on archival matte Epson paper and put 8 images per page in Photoshop.

2. Archival paper or cardstock to use as a backing for your card so it is more sturdy. This is optional; many photo ACEO's do not have backing.

3. Paper Cutter. You will need this for straight edges. Roll cutters are good too, but don't even try using scissors. I did and wasted a good deal of printing paper.

4. Archival spray adhesive. I used Elmers and it worked great. Make sure you use an archival glue to extend the life of your ACEO.

5. Rubber roller

6. Pencil

7. OPTIONAL: mat for framing. I had 5x7 mats cut to fit the 2.5 x 3.5 ACEO at my local frame shop for about $5.00 each.

How to:

Once you have all of your supplies and have printed out your images you are ready to start.

Step One: Spray adhesive (in a well ventilated area) on the blank sheet of archival paper or cardstock. Place the sheet with images on it on top of it (image side up, of course!). Make sure papers are lined up as straight as possible and that the glue covers the blank sheet thoroughly.

Step Two: Place the glued together papers on a flat surface and use the roller to flatten it out. You want to make sure there are no gluey lumps (which there shouldn't be with a spray adhesive) and make sure the papers are really pressed together well. This step is important and will give you a very nice finished product.

Step 3: Once the adhesive has dried, you are ready to cut the images out with a cutter or rolling cutter. Make sure you know how to use your cutter. If you aren't very crafty, like me, you are bound to make mistakes. Practice first! Cut each 2.5 x 3.5 image out.

*If you don't own a paper cutter, they can be purchased at any craft store or Target for $10 to $60.

Step 4: Inspect your cards and make sure they are good to go. Sign and Date the front or back with pencil and you have your very own ACEO! See how easy it is? I chose to sign the back, as mine are full bleed, but I think they look lovely signed in the front like The Jane Studio does. (See last image)

I watched the 1935 movie, "A Midsummer Night's Dream" a week ago and can't stop thinking about it. I can honestly say it was one of the most beautiful movies I have ever seen. It starred Olivia de Havilland, Dick Powell, Jean Muir and several other stars of the 30s. While it wasn't perfect, and I found Mickey Rooney's Puck to be unbelievably stupid, the strange beauty of it drew me in. It's quite magical!

I'm enchanted by the watercolor illustrations of Zurich, Switzerland artist Emilie Maguin. Her Etsy shop, Printed Pretties by Emilie Maguin sells candy colored prints, many featuring flapper ladies and forest creatures.

I love Etsy stores that have several types of items. Lu:ka is a mix of fashion and home accessories including pillows, skirts, little fabric notebooks and lavender door hangers. I'm sorry to say that I have only participated in 2 Miss Match weeks because I have just been too busy lately. When summer is over, I hope to be an active participant. I have missed a few Divine Diptychs as well, but will be doing Week 10 and can't wait to shoot it.

Divine Diptych Project - Week 5 - Spellbound

This is the Week 5 diptych for The Divine Diptych Project. Our theme was 'Spellbound'. I have 2 different diptych projects going right now. I can barely keep up, but at least I am shooting again! There is the Divine Diptych Project, of course, and now there is also Miss Match: the fPOE Diptych Project. Both have the same sign up days and due dates, so it's a definite challenge.

Happy Spring! Can you believe it's almost April?
I did some spring cleaning in my Alice B. Gardens shop this weekend. I lowered all of my shipping prices and made all listings more uniform.
It looks great and now you can own a print for much less!

I also lowered my shipping at my Elle Moss Etsy shop a week ago and have listed about 4 new prints! I am also getting all of the bits and pieces together to start selling photo necklaces of my work. I plan on having a few square and a few round. Here are 3 examples of what I'm talking about. #3 is by far, what I would most like to create, but I have yet to find the supplies. I'm hoping to have some version of necklace in my Elle Moss shop by summer 2010.

The Impossible Project

The Impossible Project is bringing back Polaroid!
Almost a year after Polaroid decided to stop making instant film, The Impossible Project is bringing it back. Today is the day for their big announcement about the company and we will find out whether or not they really will be manufacturing new film...is it really possible?

I had my first polaroid when I was 7 or 8 years old. I still have some shots from it, too. Me and my best friend Dina in our gymnastics leotards rolling about on the floor. I loved Polaroid then and I love them now. I think I have always owned one since that time. I love everything about them...the way you hold them, the smell of them, the instant gratification. Here is hoping its good news and here is a little polaroid inspired mosaic for you.

Divine Diptych Project - Week 3 - Yellow

This week, my Divine Diptych Project partner was Susan (the melody censor). I picked this week's themes and ours was 'yellow'. We agreed upon square format and color.
After taking several still life images of daffodils and yellow tulips (weird, huh?!), I decided upon a portrait and am so glad I did. Don't the images go together well? I was so happy to see Susan's image and that our mood and tone fit together so perfectly.
I can't say enough about this project. The most supportive and amazing women are participating, and its made photography something I am excited about again. I'm hoping with the next challenges to branch out a bit and try some things I've never done before.

Last year I formed the most amazing Etsy group "Female Photographer's of Etsy", the lovely Myan came up with the idea to make a book and she, myself, Meganzii, Tiffany Teske, Shannonblue, Ligeia, Lililly and Ena and the swan did all of the behind the scenes work...choosing images, editing etc and had extra help from Shawna C., Emma In Wonderland, Mfayre, Katrina King and Nancy L. Stockdale.

I have always wanted to rework my image "Spontaneous Revolution" and I finally got around to doing it. This looks amazing printed, as the colors are very sharp, rich and saturated. Available in 8x10 and 11x14 at MY SHOP.

She's Got Legs!

Apparantly, I like to take pictures of my feet...:) As for why, I think one reason is that I want to make the image more 'anonymous'. It also tends to create a vintage mood and quirkiness that i really like.
